This game looked all over and done with at half-time with Pockets 2-0 up courtesy of goals from Terry Cain and Steve Warburton but Pockets were poor in the second half and allowed Forest Road back into the game. The Northwich team made up for their lack of flair with their hard work and will to win and they must have fancied their chances to snatch an unlikely victory as they brought the scores back to level with only 15 minutes of the game left. Their hopes were dashed when, with only minutes left, Pockets right back, Owen Fox, played a great ball down the line for Jamie Cain who cut inside his marker and slotted the ball into the corner of the net for the winner.
With George and Dragon winning 7-2 against Winnington the positions at the top of the table are reversed with The George taking over top spot by virtue of goal difference.
Pockets made sure they finished top of the league at Christmas with this crushing victory.
They have scored 22 goals against Broadhurst in their two league meetings this season and it is a sad reflection on the lack of strength in the league that with only one division the gap in quality between some of the teams is huge.
The George and Dragon keeper Michael Langley was the star of the show. He made three very good saves to keep his side in this game. Sean Taylforth had scored for the Dragon late in the second half and it looked as if that goal would be enough to secure the three points but Hayden Farrell equalised with a headed goal to secure a draw for Pockets and to ensure the chase for the Premier League title between these closely matched rivals will continue to the end of the season.
The referee didn’t show for this game so Dave Larkin, the manager of Brighton Belle stood in and he did a good job.
Having not played for two weeks it took Pockets a while to open up Brighton Belle but in the end it turned out to be an easy win. 9 goals scored, 4 of them by Terry Cain and the only sour note for Pockets was the ankle injury to centre forward Steve Hughes who will be out till the New Year. Not good news for the team as they face The George and Dragon next week.
